A Birthday Dinner for Mom at Randall's

We recently took Mom out for her birthday dinner at Randall’s Restaurant in Orfield, Pennsylvania, and it was such a lovely evening. The menu has a really nice balance of land and sea, so there was plenty to choose from. I thought for sure Mom would go for the oysters — she’s always loved them — but she reminded me of something I honestly had never heard before. She said you shouldn’t eat oysters unless there’s an “R” in the month. I had to look it up, and sure enough, it’s a real thing: you should only eat oysters during months with an “R” (September through April) because the warm summer months cause bacteria to grow faster and make the oysters spawn, which ruins their taste. I learned something new from Mom, just like always.

my mom looked great. Here's carrot cake.

Mom has always been someone who isn’t afraid to try something new. After years of doing my dad’s accounting, she got the itch for a change and jumped into something completely different — starting her own party rental business. That business, Buxmont Party Center out of New Brunswick, Pennsylvania, is still going strong today. It really says everything about who she is.

Happy birthday, Mom. Here’s to many more celebrations — with oysters in the right months, of course.
